Guide to Grand Bahama Island

The Charter Hotspot

The starting point for crewed yacht charters in the Bahamas, the cosmopolitan charm and the laid-back island lifestyle is the perfect place to introduce yourself to the Bahamian way of life. As one of the most northern islands in the Bahama chain, the mere 55 nautical miles from mainland Florida is all you need to jump into a completely different world.

The two main shopping locations on the island are the International Bazaar in Freeport and the Marketplace in Port Lucaya. Both locations offer a mixture of luxuries and quality cuisine, perfect for starting your vacation on a high. The other main settlement on the island, West End, has a more traditional and Bahamian feel about it which also offers the perfect opportunity for your first fishing trip in the Bahamas.

When exploring the rest of the island you will be spoilt for choice. For nature lovers, one of your fist stops should be the Lucayan National Park which is home to 40 acres of dense forest and the largest underwater cave system in the world. Other nature points include the Rand Memorial Nature Centre and the Garden of Groves.

Taking in the sights of the island couldn't be easier than taking a trip round to High Rock on the southern edge of the island. Climb ashore and make your way to the top of the lighthouse to find a stunning panoramic view of Grand Bahama and the surrounding waters. If the view of paradise isn't enough for you, take the plunge to see what the waters have to offer.

Between West End and Freeport is Deadman's Reef. Ideal for you first reef experience in the Bahamas, the coral formations are not far from the shore and are home to hundreds of beautifully colored fish. Remaining close by, you can also investigate the wreck of a 238 foot freighter known as Theo's Wreck. Located on the edge of a continental shelf the 100 foot drop to the wreck is great for all divers.

To make Grand Bahama Island an iconic starting point of your Bahamian tour, start planning by comparing all of the available private crewed superyachts for Bahamas yacht charters.
