Guide to the Solomon Islands

Home to intriguing tribal cultures, picture perfect atolls and an abundance of marine life, the Solomon Islands lay sprawled across the Pacific Ocean with an allure which has captured the heart of many travellers.

Renowned as a haven for diving enthusiasts, the underwater world of the Solomon Islands offers a plethora of sunken warships, abundant coral reefs and a kaleidoscope of tropical fish. Famed for some of the best diving spots in the world, this charter destination has long been favoured by divers and snorkellers alike with excellent conditions for most of the year. With uncrowded waves for surfers and fantastic fishing opportunities, the waters here alone offer a whole host of adventures.

Located to the east of Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands are split into nine unique provinces. The provinces are named, Choiseul, Isabel, Western, Central, Malaita, Guadalcanal, Makira, Temotu and Rennell & Bellona and each one is steeped in a distinctive history and a wealth of customs and ancient traditions.

Choiseul Province
The Choiseul Province is an adventurer’s haven with its main attractions being the cascading waterfalls, local villages and untouched natural wonders. Cruising along the striking waters of Choiseul Bay is a calm and tranquil venture; though be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the floats of saltwater crocodiles which often glide through these crystalline waters.

Isabel Province
Also known as Santa Isabel, Isabel is brimmed with lush forestation, coconut plantations and mountain villages. Explore the wild interiors of local village treks, experience the traditional dance and gaze in awe at the breeding site of endangered Hawksbill turtles.

Western Province
Comprised of 11 main islands, the Western Province is the most developed in the Solomon archipelago. This myriad of verdant islands of white beaches and ethereal blues makes for stunning surrounding views of nature at its best. The capital of Gizo boasts open-air markets, invigorating hikes, astonishing panoramic views and great fishing spots.

Central Province
The Central Islands boast a haven for diving enthusiasts with coral reefs and WWII wrecks making for intriguing underwater exploration. Teeming with natural wonders and large coconut groves, this idyllic island destination is steeped in historic tales and a plethora of exciting experiences.

Guadalcanal
Home to the Solomon Islands capital city of Honiara, Guadalcanal abounds with natural wonders and luxuriant landscape vistas. Lovers of the outdoors will adore the unlimited hiking opportunities whilst divers can explore the WWII wrecks which line the coastline of the scattered sandy beaches.

Malaita
Famed for the unique panpipe bands, the Malaita province boasts mountain villages and a rich century old culture of people. This fascinating island offers unparalleled natural beauty and a wealth of unforgettable experiences.

Temotu
Made up of three islands, the province of Temotu is steeped in historical cultures and charms. Gleaming with scattered sandy beaches, Temotu boasts excellent diving and snorkelling spots plus a wealth of historical tales.

Rennell & Belona
This two island province is the world’s largest uplifted coral island. Rennell boasts the world’s largest inland lake, Lake Tengano. This former lagoon is the islands main feature and is renowned for its endemic species of Sea Krait, offering outstanding views and calm crystal waters. This lake is an astounding natural wonder.
