Guide to Saint Martin

A decadent blend of two distinctive personalities

As you approach from the seductive cruising grounds of the Caribbean, conical peaks rise dramatically from the deep ocean depths and gentle cerulean currents tumble landward to kiss the bleach-blonde sands of charismatic Saint Martin, also known as Sint Maarten. Its two distinct personalities and cultural infusions create an oasis of escapism and a hedonistic yacht charter destination.

Split into two halves, with the French in the north known as St. Martin and the Dutch in the south known as St. Maarten, it is the smallest island in the world under the governance of two countries. This infusion of cultures, customs and cuisines blended with the Caribbean charm and exquisite setting forms a heady and charismatic luxury yacht charter destination. Lying south of Anguilla and north of its diminutive brother St. Barts, the lush island is perfect for enjoying watersports and outdoor activities, from sailing and surfing to horseback riding along the alabaster sands.

The northern part of the island is the less developed of the two with beautifully secluded beaches and a comfortable yet elegant atmosphere with a fantastic selection of luxury hotels and gourmet restaurants. The capital town of Marigot was originally a fishing village but now plays hosts to colourful gingerbread houses and charming bistros that line its winding streets. Explore the lush nature reserve that covers the northern end, take in the views of the harbour and Anguilla from the ruins of Louis Fort and snorkel in the offshore reefs before indulging in a rum cocktail at one of the beach bars.

The Dutch region in the south has a lively vibe with casinos, restaurants and a buzzing nightlife. The main town of Philipsburg is the island’s commercial centre as well as the main shopping district and is home to spectacular colonial architecture and the major port. With over 30 fabulous white-sand beaches to choose from throughout the island, from the quintessential Caribbean feel of Friar’s Bay to the urban beach of Simpsons Bay, you are truly spoilt for choice. Orient Bay is also ideal for adventurous travellers who are looking to try out parasailing, windsurfing and other watersports. A charter here would not be complete without a visit to the small islands Tintamere and Isle Pinel where the sublime beaches are perfect for a private paradise picnic.
