Bahamas Climate & Weather Averages

Weather Information for Bahamas

The Bahamas enjoys a warm subtropical-to-tropical climate that makes it one of the most established year-round yacht charter destinations in the Caribbean. Conditions remain comfortably warm throughout the year, with daytime temperatures typically ranging from 24°C in winter to around 31–32°C in peak summer. Sea temperatures are equally inviting, fluctuating between 24°C and 29°C, ensuring excellent swimming and watersports conditions across the islands and shallow turquoise banks.

The island chain’s weather is primarily shaped by the northeast trade winds, but these winds shift in strength and direction throughout the year. From October to April, winds are generally stronger and predominantly northeasterly, averaging around 12–15 knots. This period includes the well-known “Christmas winds” in late December and early January, when breezier conditions can bring livelier passages between the islands. From May to September, winds tend to ease and shift more toward the southeast, averaging closer to 10–12 knots, creating some of the most comfortable and predictable conditions of the year for smooth yacht charters in the Bahamas.

From June through November, the broader Atlantic hurricane season introduces an additional layer of variability, with tropical waves periodically moving across the region. These systems can temporarily alter wind direction, often pivoting easterly trades toward the southeast or south, and may bring short-lived squalls or unsettled conditions. While not a constant presence, they are an important seasonal factor that influences itinerary planning during the summer and early autumn months.

Bahamian Wind Patterns

A defining feature of Bahamian weather, particularly during the winter and spring months, is the passage of North American cold fronts, locally referred to as “Northers.” These systems can temporarily disrupt the prevailing wind pattern in a dramatic sequence. Ahead of a front, winds often veer to the south or southeast, bringing warmer, more humid air. As the front moves through, winds can briefly drop before shifting sharply to the north or northwest, producing short periods of stronger gusts and choppier seas, especially across shallow banks and in opposition to the Gulf Stream. Once the system passes, high pressure rebuilds and the familiar northeast trade winds gradually re-establish themselves.

On a more local level, the Bahamas is also influenced by diurnal land and sea breezes, particularly due to its vast network of low-lying islands and shallow waters. Mornings are often the calmest part of the day, with light, steady conditions ideal for relaxed cruising or anchoring. As the land warms through the afternoon, localized sea breezes can develop, occasionally strengthening winds and shifting direction, which may turn an otherwise calm morning into a more energetic afternoon on the water.

Bahamas Climate Charts

By using our extensive climate guides for each charter region throughout the world, you can explore in-depth weather information for each month and work out which time will suit your individual needs.

For example, the sea temperature will largely affect how much time you intend on spending in the water trying out your superyacht toys so watersports will want to make sure they travel during the warmest periods. In contrast, some areas may become particularly hot during summer and charterers would be advised to book later to ensure more comfortable conditions.

Although the most popular times to embark on a private superyacht vacation are usually during the peak summer months, there are many different elements to take into consideration before you go. Here we have used our detailed climate data to provide a monthly overview of when might be the best times to visit each destination.

The most popular time to visit the Bahamas is between December and April, when the climate is at its driest and most stable. During this period, visitors can expect warm but comfortable temperatures, lower humidity, and consistent northeast trade winds that typically sit between 12–15 knots. These conditions are ideal for yacht charters in the Exumas, where protected anchorages, sandbars, and shallow cruising grounds are at their most inviting.

The shoulder months of November and May offer an appealing balance between favorable weather and lighter visitor numbers. Winds are generally more moderate, seas are warm, and conditions are often settled enough for relaxed cruising between islands. These transitional periods can also provide excellent visibility for snorkeling and diving, with fewer yachts in popular anchorages compared to peak winter months.

From June through November, the Bahamas enters its wetter and more climatically active season, coinciding with the Atlantic hurricane season. While this period brings higher humidity, warmer sea temperatures, and a greater chance of tropical weather systems, it also features gentler southeasterly trade winds and many days of calm, sunny cruising conditions. For experienced charter guests seeking quieter anchorages and warmer waters, this can still be a rewarding time to visit, though the winter and early spring months remain the most reliable and widely recommended period for a Bahamas yacht charter.
