Here we have used our detailed climate data to provide a monthly overview of when might be the best times to visit each destination.

The most popular time to visit the Virgin Islands is between December and April, when the islands experience their driest weather, lower humidity, and consistently refreshing trade winds. Daytime temperatures generally hover between 29°C and 30°C, while sea temperatures remain a comfortable 26–27°C, creating ideal conditions for island hopping, snorkeling, and sailing between the region's many protected anchorages.

For many visitors, February through May offers the best combination of reliable weather and excellent cruising conditions. Rainfall is typically at its lowest, sunshine averages eight to nine hours per day, and the steady easterly trade winds provide enjoyable sailing without the intense heat of midsummer.

The summer months of June through August bring warmer sea temperatures of around 28–29°C and long, sunny days, making them particularly appealing for swimming and making the most of watersports yacht charters. By late summer and early autumn, humidity and rainfall increase as the Atlantic hurricane season progresses, with September and October generally representing the wettest months of the year. Even so, showers are often brief and localized, and the tropical climate continues to provide many opportunities to enjoy the islands both on and off the water.

Trade Winds & Yacht Charter Conditions

The Virgin Islands are renowned for their reliable easterly trade winds, which are a defining feature of the region's exceptional sailing conditions. Typically blowing between 10 and 20 knots, these steady breezes provide natural cooling throughout the year while creating predictable conditions that have made both the British Virgin Islands and US Virgin Islands favorites among sailors and luxury yacht charters alike.

Between December and February, the trade winds often strengthen during a seasonal phenomenon known locally as the "Christmas Winds." During these periods, sustained breezes can reach 20–30 knots for several days, creating livelier sailing conditions across exposed channels while remaining comfortably manageable within the islands' many sheltered cruising grounds.

Local geography also has a significant influence on conditions. The mountainous islands create pronounced wind shadows, meaning sheltered bays on the leeward coasts often enjoy calmer waters, while open passages such as the Drake Channel can funnel and accelerate the prevailing trades, producing stronger winds and more energetic seas. This natural variation allows charter itineraries in the Virgin Islands to combine relaxed cruising with more spirited sailing, depending on the route and daily conditions.

From August through November, the Caribbean's wetter season brings lighter and more variable winds at times, together with an increased chance of tropical showers and weather systems associated with the Atlantic hurricane season. While conditions can become less predictable, rainfall is often short-lived, and many days continue to offer extended periods of sunshine between passing showers.
