Durban Plans Superyacht Marina as South Africa Builds Its Marine Industry

By Anna Ingles   23 October 2026

Plans for a new superyacht marina in Durban are progressing as South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province seeks to develop its marine industry and attract more visiting yachts.

The proposed facility at the Port of Durban would combine berthing with refit and maintenance services, potentially giving superyachts and luxury yacht charters operating along Africa’s eastern coast another base for technical support, fuel and provisioning.

The project builds on a partnership established in July 2025 between the KwaZulu-Natal provincial government and NAVIGO, an Italian maritime cluster representing over 400 companies across the yachting industry. The collaboration was announced at the KZN–NAVIGO Boat Building and Yachting Industry roundtable, with ambitions spanning marine technology, vessel development, and skills training.

From Industry Partnership to Marina Plans

NAVIGO’s involvement is intended to connect KwaZulu-Natal with expertise and businesses across the Italian yachting sector. The original partnership focused on strengthening local capabilities and creating opportunities for cooperation in areas including design, technology, and marine manufacturing, alongside efforts to develop a skilled workforce.

The proposed KwaZulu-Natal Superyacht Marina represents a more specific step toward developing infrastructure for visiting superyachts and motor yacht charters. It forms part of the wider Durban Bay Waterfront Project, with a proposed 24-hectare precinct intended to accommodate berthing and yacht servicing facilities. The Transnet National Ports Authority’s ship repair strategy also reserves the proposed site for maintenance and refit activities.

The KZN Superyacht Marina is not just about berthing boats. It is about positioning Durban as the gateway to the Indian Ocean superyacht circuit, turning our maritime heritage into a high-value economic engine for the city and its residents.

Musa Mbhele, City Manager

In March 2026, eThekwini Municipality presented NAVIGO with a signed letter of intent at the Yachting Aftersales and Refit Experience (YARE) conference in Viareggio, Italy. Durban City Council subsequently approved a three-year partnership in July and authorized the development of a KZN Superyacht Implementation Plan.

The municipality estimates the project could attract R1.9 billion in private investment and create more than 2,500 direct jobs by 2030. These figures are projections rather than confirmed investment or employment outcomes.

What the Project Could Mean for Yacht Charters

For the yacht charter sector, the proposed marina’s potential value lies in the services available to yachts between cruising regions. A dedicated refit and maintenance base could give captains another option when planning technical work or arranging supplies along the Indian Ocean coast, although the facilities and services that will ultimately be delivered have yet to be confirmed.

NAVIGO has committed to attracting at least 10 superyacht visits to Durban annually from 2028. The municipality estimates that fuel sales associated with these calls could generate around R100 million per year, excluding spending on repairs, provisions, accommodation and tourism.

The project also includes plans to work with Durban University of Technology on a proposed superyacht academy, with training intended to develop local skills that could support the region’s future refit and servicing capabilities for visiting superyachts and South Africa charter yachts.

For charter guests, these developments are relevant as part of the wider infrastructure supporting yachts that cruise beyond established Mediterranean and Caribbean circuits. However, the marina should not yet be treated as an operational charter hub, and its eventual role in itineraries will depend on the facilities completed and the level of service they can provide.

YARE Symposium to Bring Industry Focus to Durban

Durban is due to host the first African edition of the YARE On Tour Symposium in November 2026, bringing further attention to the city’s plans for superyacht services and emerging cruising routes. The event follows the municipality’s engagement with the international yachting industry, including its participation in the Monaco Yacht Show in September 2026.

The symposium will provide a further opportunity to discuss the proposed development with industry representatives as KwaZulu-Natal works to attract private investment and build its maritime capabilities. The next significant test will be translating the partnership and implementation planning into confirmed facilities that can support visiting superyachts.

If delivered as envisaged, the marina could become part of the support network for yachts operating around southern and eastern Africa. For now, Durban’s proposal marks an ongoing effort to establish that infrastructure, rather than a confirmed new destination for superyacht charters.
