Located on an islet at the heart of the Dalmatian Coast, Trogir is just 17 miles from Split, and linked by bridges to both the mainland and to the far larger Čiovo Island. Its old town is one of the most finely preserved in the Adriatic, boasting palaces, belfries and maze-like marbled streets fanning out from an antique central square. Romanesque and Renaissance buildings have been carefully preserved to retain their glory-day charm, creating a calming sense of authenticity and earning the town the nickname ‘The Stone Beauty’. The town is the perfect place to stop while enjoying a crewed Mediterranean yacht charter in this region of the Adriatic.
For its size, Trogir punches above its weight for historical sights, the most famous of which is the Cathedral of St Lawrence. This unique monument was finally completed in 1240 and, following a colourful history spanning over four centuries of attacks and rebuilding, exhibits three separate architectural styles. At 47 metres high, it is the highest building in Trogir, and its tower offers the best views over the town and surrounding area.
If you enter Trogir via the mainland you’ll be greeted by a statue of local patron St John guarding his community. Continue to explore and you’ll find treats such as the historic town hall, which hosts summer concerts in its Gothic courtyard, the 14th century Loggia with its Renaissance reliefs and sculptures, and the artwork-filled Benedictine Monastery of St Nicholas.
After a day wandering around the many sights, the harbour will be a welcome respite as the sun begins to set. A cluster of bars and restaurants line the waterfront here and provide the perfect place to watch the luxury yachts bobbing on the water and enjoy the incredible scenery that this part of the world has to offer.
