REV Ocean unveil world’s deepest diving submarine AURELIA

By Nina Done   3 May 2022

Heralding the “first of its class”, REV Ocean recently unveiled its new self-propelled 3-person Triton submersible AURELIA in Barcelona – the deepest diving vessel of its kind – which is scheduled to undergo sea trials in the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean over the coming weeks, in preparation for its first underwater missions.

The teams at REV Ocean and Triton will be on hand as the submersible undertakes its final stage of sea trials before the all-important certification and commissioning process prior to delivery.

Designed to explore depths of up to 2,300m (7,500ft) DSV AURELIA’s large acrylic sphere offers “a truly immersive experience for occupants, with near 360-degree unobstructed views”. The submarine is also kitted out with fully compliant, state-of-the-art scientific equipment to facilitate sample and data collation at record depths. She will join REV Ocean’s other deep sea vehicle ROV AURORA, who has already completed missions to sample hydrothermal vents in the Arctic Ocean for the first time.

Triton Co-Founder and President Patrick Lahey adds, “Triton is proud to support REV Ocean’s ambitious initiative to dive deeper, explore further and learn more about the ocean. With the introduction of the Triton 7500/3 (Aurelia), it is now possible for REV Ocean to take a pilot and two crew members on dives as deep as 2,300 meters or 7,500 feet while they enjoy the most compelling viewing experience achieved to date from inside the thickest acrylic sphere ever created. Aurelia will also feature several other new technologies, which increase endurance, expand utility, and enhance effectiveness in ways not possible before. At Triton, we never stop innovating and it is a privilege and an honor to work collaboratively with an organization like REV Ocean, which shares our passion and enthusiasm for ocean exploration.”

Expedition yacht REV OCEAN

Expedition yacht REV OCEAN is currently still under construction, with additional delays due to technical and weight issues caused by the Vard Brattvåg shipyard in Norway, but it is hoped she will be fully compliant and ready for delivery sometime in 2024.

In the interim, REV Ocean’s ambition for ‘One Healthy Ocean’ has remained at the forefront of everything they do, including the development of innovative solutions to assist in their overarching mission for ocean conservation.
