Livorno is strengthening its position as a gateway to Tuscany and the Western Mediterranean, with a new superyacht facility now opening at the historic Porto Mediceo.
The development forms part of a wider expansion of marina infrastructure across Italy, giving larger charter yachts additional options for accessing destinations including Tuscany, Sardinia, and the French Riviera.
The new facility is being developed by D-Marin, which is expanding its Italian marina network to include Livorno alongside recent additions in northern Sardinia. For the charter market, the changes add further berthing options along a cruising corridor that links mainland Italy with some of the Mediterranean's established island and coastal destinations.
At the center of the development is the Mediceo Pontoon, which can accommodate superyachts up to 80m (262ft). Located within Livorno's historic Porto Mediceo and alongside the Fortezza Vecchia, the marina places visiting yachts within reach of Tuscany's coastline and inland destinations.
Livorno is also an established maritime center with a significant concentration of shipyards and yacht services. This gives the new facility a role beyond visiting Mediterranean yacht charters, providing infrastructure in a location where superyachts can combine cruising with access to the wider marine services ecosystem.
The marina is being delivered in phases. The first phase includes 150 berths for yachts up to 14m (46ft), alongside more than 400 berths within the inner basin, while the first phase of the superyacht marina is scheduled for completion by the end of 2026 and the full development by the end of 2027.
The opening of D-Marin Livorno to superyachts marks another important step in the growth of our Italian portfolio and our wider presence across the Mediterranean. As we continue to expand our presence in key cruising destinations, our focus remains on delivering the consistent quality of service, hospitality and technology our customers expect from D-Marin.
For Italy yacht charter itineraries, Livorno provides an alternative point of access to Tuscany's coastal and inland attractions. Its position on the mainland also allows yachts to connect the region with longer Western Mediterranean itineraries rather than treating Tuscany as an isolated cruising ground.
The development includes 24-hour security, concierge services, retail and dining facilities, as well as marina technology designed to support berth and vessel management. These facilities are intended to make the marina useful both as a destination in its own right and as a practical base for yachts moving between cruising areas.
Popular Inspiration Guides For Italy yacht charters
The Livorno development forms part of a broader increase in superyacht berthing capacity across Italy. In northern Sardinia, Marina di Olbia now accommodates yachts up to 150m (492ft), with 270 berths and a 200m (656ft) fuel dock capable of serving up to seven yachts simultaneously.
Its location near Olbia Costa Smeralda International Airport and the city center provides access to the Costa Smeralda, Tavolara, the La Maddalena Archipelago and Corsica. Molo Brin, also in Olbia, is scheduled for full opening in May 2027 and will accommodate yachts up to 150m (492ft) in the heart of the city, having already welcomed several superyachts during summer 2026.
For charter yachts, the combination of Livorno and Olbia creates additional options for itineraries between mainland Italy and Sardinia. Rather than relying on a small number of established superyacht gateways, the expanding network gives captains more choice over where to berth, embark guests or position an Italy yacht charter between bookings.
Livorno is not developing in isolation. Across the West Mediterranean, additional berthing capacity is making it easier for larger yachts to move between established cruising areas, with facilities in La Spezia, Sardinia, the French Riviera, and Mallorca complementing the network on the Italian mainland.
Porto Mirabello in La Spezia can accommodate yachts up to 135m (443ft), while Camille Rayon on the French Riviera has capacity for yachts up to 75m (246ft). In Mallorca, Palma Cuarentena provides 70 berths for yachts up to 70m (230ft), adding another option on the western side of the Mediterranean cruising circuit.
For charter yachts, the importance of this expanding infrastructure is less about the number of individual marinas and more about the additional flexibility it creates. With more locations able to handle larger yachts, charter itineraries in the Mediterranean can be planned around the destinations guests want to visit rather than being dictated as heavily by where suitable berthing is available.
The growth also reflects how quickly Italy's marina landscape is changing. D-Marin has increased its Italian presence from one marina in 2023 to eight destinations, contributing to a wider shift toward more connected superyacht infrastructure across the Mediterranean rather than relying on a handful of established ports.
Offering more opportunities than ever to experience the Italian way of life, this is a great time to start planning an indulgent voyage among some of the Med's most captivating destinations.
