In a landmark moment for sustainable luxury yachting, renowned shipyard Lürssen has officially launched the 375ft (114m) superyacht Project COSMOS from its Rendsburg facility. Designed by visionary Marc Newson, this groundbreaking yacht heralds a new era in environmentally conscious yacht engineering.
Previously known as Project 13759, Project COSMOS represents one of the most ambitious leaps toward a zero-emission future in the superyacht industry. A first for the shipyard, a methanol-powered fuel-cell system is a main focal point for her green credentials, generating hydrogen onboard to supply electricity without combustion, noise, or harmful emissions.
Fuel cells have very little maintenance and are more efficient than a diesel engine, which is already a very efficient way to produce power.
This innovative propulsion allows the superyacht to remain emission-free for up to 15 nights at anchor or to cruise at 7 knots for around 1,000 nautical miles, relying solely on clean energy. With no exhaust gases and drastically reduced vibrations, the system also enhances comfort for guests while minimising her environmental footprint.
Lürssen’s long-term investment in fuel-cell research, beginning in 2009 and advancing with methanol-hydrogen technology from 2012, sets Project COSMOS as a pioneering benchmark for future large-yacht builds. At 6,300 GT and a comfortable position in the top 40 of the YachtBuyer YB100 listing of the world's biggest yachts, she combines a vast interior with a design philosophy that places sustainability on equal footing with luxury.

Although it is currently unknown whether this groundbreaking superyacht will be joining the fleet of Lürssen yachts for charter, Project COSMOS raises the bar for future charter prospects in the fast-growing eco-luxury yachting sector. Should she become available for charter in the future, she would offer charter guests a truly carbon-conscious cruising experience without compromising on opulence.
Her expansive decks, striking glass-domed observation lounge, foredeck helipad, and sweeping pool area create a haven onboard for both relaxation and adventure. Extensive glazing floods the interiors with natural light, offering uninterrupted vistas whether at anchor during a Mediterranean yacht charter or exploring remote, eco-sensitive destinations.
While it is true that as a custom shipyard, no two yachts that leave our halls are ever the same, there are some that leave an indelible mark on our history – COSMOS is undoubtedly one of those yachts.
With her ability to operate in complete silence, free from the hum of traditional generators, Project COSMOS opens the door to new cruising grounds where environmental regulations are tightening, from protected marine parks to pristine polar regions of Antarctica yacht charter routes. This flexibility, coupled with her cutting-edge green technology, makes her not only a technological showpiece but a potentially transformative presence in the global charter fleet.
An indicator of the industry-wide efforts to create a greener carbon footprint for yachts and motor yacht charters, Project COSMOS is part of a wider shift towards cleaner, more responsible yacht building. Across the industry, designers, shipyards, and event organisers are stepping up efforts to cut the environmental impact and embrace innovative propulsion technologies.
The Monaco Yacht Show has amplified this momentum with its Blue Wake™ programme, which replaces the Sustainability Hub and brings sustainability into the event’s core identity. Making its inaugural appearance in the 2025 edition, 28 exhibitors, each vetted in partnership with the Water Revolution Foundation, have been selected to showcase genuine, operationally viable solutions, from hybrid propulsion and alternative fuels to energy-efficient onboard systems and circular-economy refit practices. This initiative underscores Monaco’s role as a catalyst for green innovation.
On the water, Feadship’s 390ft (119m) superyacht BREAKTHROUGH has become another landmark in sustainable superyacht design as the world’s first hydrogen fuel-cell superyacht. With the ability to run hotel load and cruise silently for up to a week on liquid hydrogen, luxury yacht BREAKTHROUGH demonstrates the practical potential of zero-emission power. Her 7,247 GT volume, multiple beach platforms, and show-stopping 8.2-meter infinity pool prove that sustainability and luxury can co-exist on a grand scale.
Together, initiatives like Blue Wake™ and game-changing superyachts such as BREAKTHROUGH show that the yachting world’s green revolution is well underway, and that Project COSMOS is joining a growing fleet of luxury yachts redefining what it means to sail in style with a lighter environmental touch.
