Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta introduces new racing format for 2019

By Katia Damborsky   6 November 2018

The 2019 Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta will now span across five days instead of four, after last year’s races in Porto Cervo were put on hold due to bad weather.

Last year, the AP flag was flying on the shores of Sardinia, signalling that races would not go ahead on days one and two of the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta. An unusual lack of wind led to cancellations, postponements and caused a number of retirements during the four days of racing.

In a bid to prevent such interruptions to the 2019 event in June, organisers have introduced a new racing format which will see the races going ahead across five full days instead of four.

It’s hoped that this will create a more flexible format to allow for any cancelled races to be rescheduled.

After a shaky start to the regatta last year, the 40m/130ft sailing yacht ‘My Song’ from Baltic Yachts in Class A and the 27m/89ft Concordia sailing yacht SAVANNAH in Class B took home two wins each.

Hosted annually by Yacht Club Smeralda in Porto Cervo, the location is known for its sea-worthy conditions and abundance of racing routes around the beautiful La Maddalena archipelago.

Not only does the event attract a stand-out selection of sailing yachts, but it also boasts a sparkling social programme, from functions at the clubhouse to celebratory soirees on board the superyachts in attendance.

With the races now taking place across five days instead of four, those attending the event can look forward to an additional day of on-the-water thrills, lively festivities and breathtaking Italian scenery.
