Since the world’s media channels were ignited with the news that the Greece economy had gone into turmoil two years ago, brokers and central agents have been working hard to separate fact from press hype in a bid to restore faith in the charter market.
Despite offering some of the most diverse and beautiful cruising grounds in the world, countless images of protesters and rioters clashing on the streets has meant that luxury charter yachts in Greece are still struggling to overcome the negative impressions of the country as a charter region. Little coverage however is shown of the peaceful and beautiful anchorages that the country and surrounding islands have to offer. Professionals throughout the luxury charter industry, not only in Greece but around the world agree that the media has portrayed a very false image of the region and even at the height of the problems, charter vacations were in no way effected.
Since the start of the downturn, the unrest has calmed considerably on the mainland whilst the surrounding islands still remain serene and beautiful throughout the year. Charter experts have advised those considering a charter vacation in Greece to not be influenced by the recent events, with many brokers offering first-hand advice on the best areas to visit, both on land and sea to eradicate any concerns. Many of the yachts that are based in Greece are well practiced at helping charter clients avoid any protests in the Athens area and are willing to do pick-ups and drop-offs in the outer-islands as opposed to in the traditional marina area in and around Piraeus.
Charter Broker, Fotis Geranios, of Aris Drivas Yachting agrees that the media have vastly exaggerated the Greek crisis situation and adds that charter industry professionals are on hand to alleviate clients concerns: ‘It is important project a positive image of Greece as a country as well as a charter destination despite the media’s portrayal. Charter companies and central agencies have acted quickly into securing bank accounts in other countries with more stable economy in order to make any money transfer safer.’
As a whole the problems have been isolated to certain areas and if anything a luxury charter vacation in Greece now offers better value for money than ever. It is reported that fine dining and local wines are down by as much 50% and the low berthing costs are truly astonishing compared the extortionate prices seen in charter destinations such as the Côte d’Azur.
The Greek fleet of charter yachts is currently preparing for what central agents and retail brokers alike hope will be an improved season of business in summer 2013. Voluntary campaigns such as ‘Up Greek Tourism’ have been out in force to promote Greece and re-establish its reputation as a fantastic holiday destination, further demonstrating the sense of community and pride amongst local people. From exploring cities steeped in history to hopping around a breath-taking selection of islands including the Dodecanese, Ionian’s and Cyclades, these spectacular cruising grounds remain an unforgettable luxury charter destination.
