French Polynesia Climate & Weather Averages

Weather Information for French Polynesia

French Polynesia enjoys a warm tropical climate throughout the year, making it one of the Pacific’s most distinctive yacht charter destinations, defined by volcanic peaks, sheltered lagoons, and consistently inviting sea temperatures. Daytime conditions typically range between 28°C and 31°C, with warm nights rarely dropping below 21°C. Sea temperatures remain exceptionally stable year-round, generally between 26°C and 29°C, ensuring ideal conditions for swimming, snorkeling, and extended time spent exploring the islands by yacht.

French Polynesian Climate & Wind Patterns

The region is shaped by two main seasonal weather patterns, influenced by shifts in the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) and the alternating trade wind systems. From November through April, the ITCZ sits further south across the charter routes of French Polynesia, bringing increased humidity, higher rainfall, and more frequent tropical showers. This is also when the Mara’amu (southern trade winds) are more commonly felt, typically arriving from the southeast and bringing stronger, cooler breezes, particularly around Tahiti and the Society Islands. While this period sees more unsettled weather, showers are often brief and interspersed with periods of bright sunshine, with landscapes becoming especially lush and waterfalls at their most dramatic.

From May through October, the ITCZ shifts northward, allowing more stable high-pressure conditions to dominate the region. This brings a noticeably drier climate, reduced rainfall, and clearer skies across the islands. During this period, the To’erau (northerly to northwesterly winds) are more likely to be experienced, generally lighter and more variable than the Mara’amu, contributing to calm lagoon conditions and smooth inter-island passages. These months are widely regarded as the most settled time of year, offering some of the most comfortable and reliable cruising conditions in the South Pacific.

French Polynesia Climate Charts

By using our extensive climate guides for each charter region throughout the world, you can explore in-depth weather information for each month and work out which time will suit your individual needs.

For example, the sea temperature will largely affect how much time you intend on spending in the water trying out your superyacht toys so watersports will want to make sure they travel during the warmest periods. In contrast, some areas may become particularly hot during summer and charterers would be advised to book later to ensure more comfortable conditions.

Although the most popular times to embark on a private superyacht vacation are usually during the peak summer months, there are many different elements to take into consideration before you go. Here we have used our detailed climate data to provide a monthly overview of when might be the best times to visit each destination.

The most popular time to visit French Polynesia is between June and September, when the ITCZ has shifted north, and the islands experience their driest, most stable weather. During this period, charter guests can expect warm temperatures, lower humidity, and exceptional visibility across the lagoons and coral reefs. Calm seas and light winds create ideal conditions for cruising between Tahiti, Bora Bora, and the wider Society Islands, making it one of the most rewarding times for a yacht charter in the region.

The shoulder months of May and October offer a particularly appealing balance of favorable conditions and quieter anchorages. The transition between wind systems during these months often results in light breezes and comfortable temperatures, while rainfall remains relatively low. For many, this period represents a sweet spot in the French Polynesia charter season, combining excellent cruising conditions with a more tranquil atmosphere both on land and at sea.

From November through April, the region enters its wetter season as the ITCZ moves south once again. While rainfall becomes more frequent and humidity increases, conditions remain warm and inviting, with sea temperatures staying consistently high. This period also brings the influence of the Mara’amu winds, which can occasionally create livelier sailing conditions, particularly around more exposed passes. Despite the increased variability, this season reveals a more dramatic and atmospheric side of French Polynesia, with fewer yachts in popular anchorages and a striking contrast between lush mountain interiors and bright turquoise lagoons.
