Debuting in 1954, Cannes Lions has become one of the most vital and established events for creative marketers keen to showcase their latest work and get deals done.
Dreamt up by a team of advertising executives inspired by the Cannes Film Festival, the first edition of what is now the Cannes Lions festival was actually held in Venice, and was named the ‘International Advertising Film Festival’.
Designed to recognise the creative minds in marketing, the event offered a prize to the most impressive advertisement designed for cinema.
Styled on the ‘lion of Venice’ statue which occupies a large part of the eastern column in the Piazza San Marcos, the now iconic trophy was first awarded to a team of Italian filmmakers who had produced an impressive commercial for Chlorodont toothpaste.
Following the success of their inaugural event, the Screen Advertising World Association (SAWA) hosted the second edition of what is now Cannes Lions in Monte Carlo, returning to Cannes the year after. Following this, the event was alternated each year between Venice and Cannes before settling permanently at the Palais des Festivals et des Congres in 1984.
Since taking on its residence at the state of the art convention centre, Cannes Lions has grown considerably, with new categories introduced each year to support emerging digital and social media trends.
An unmissable event for creative advertisers, the week long festival attracts a number of big name speakers, hosts a range of exciting product launches, and presents an incredible opportunity for up and coming businesses to attract new business and make a name for themselves.
Best attended on board a superyacht, businesses and entrepreneurs who charter a yacht are able to entertain and perform deals in the most exclusive and private surroundings possible, with onboard environments having the edge over the most glamorous of nearby bars and restaurants.
