Why You Have to Visit the Similan and Andaman Islands During your Thailand Charter Vacation

By Oliver Pearson   Last Updated: 9 April 2021

With incredible dive spots, signature spa treatments and seemingly limitless cuisine options, Thailand truly spoils its guests for choice. But this is only the beginning for those chartering the country's fantastic waters.

Perhaps the greatest attraction of chartering a luxury yacht is the ability to effortlessly traverse numerous destinations in the utmost comfort. Obviously, being out at sea opens up a wide variety of opportunities that simply aren’t available when staying on the mainland.

Whilst diving is big business in Thailand, it’s in the small Indian Islands a short distance away from the mainland that things get properly interesting. In just under a few hours sailing you’ll encounter unmissable views, a rich assortment of marine life, and miles of untouched beaches.

Undoubtedly the best of these well-kept secrets are the Similan and Andaman Islands.

The Similan Islands

Located 50 kilometers west of Khao Lak, the Similan Islands are home to massive schools of tropical fish, with large coral gardens sloping down 30 to 40 meters. Unlike the bustling beaches of Kata, Karon, and Patong, these islands are completely untouched, with no deck chairs or umbrellas obscuring the views.

Amongst its expansive reefs, divers can observe many diverse and rare species as they glide in and out of impressive rock formations. Playful and photogenic sea moths dart between manta rays, and an abundance of turtles laze beneath gentle leopard sharks.

Coming up for air, divers will find themselves ashore beautiful beaches with absolutely no competition for a space to take in the sunset.

For those keen to continue diving in translucent and exotically populated waters, Koh Bon and Koh Tachai can be easily reached inside 3-5 hours of sailing.

Covered in thick rainforest and fringed by idyllic beaches, these unpopulated islands are the perfect destination for sailors with a sense of adventure.

Declared a World Heritage Site in 2002, the Andaman Islands are excellently preserved and offer truly world-class dive sites. Only opened to the public in the late 1990s, marine life has been allowed to grow for centuries, and is expected to continue doing so. What’s more, the lack of commercial development on the islands means that visibility typically exceeds 40 meters and can be enjoyed in undisturbed quiet.

Possibly the greatest attraction of the Andaman Islands is the opportunity for divers to explore the active volcano off Barren Island, a site that descends over 1,000 feet and is home to many large fish and mantas.

Due to being relatively unheard of and its distance from Thailand, it’s not unusual to enjoy your time on the Andaman Islands without once seeing another vessel.
