The ultimate guide to US Virgin Islands luxury yacht charter vacations

By Oliver Pearson   Last Updated: 19 May 2023

A US Virgin Islands yacht charter delights guests with its dizzying natural beauty. Comprised of three major islands – St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix – they boast enough variety to please even the most discerning of travelers on a luxury yacht vacation. Here's our round-up of the best things to do during your superyacht charter in the US Virgin Islands.

Whether it’s a bustling nightlife scene or a remote and undisturbed bay that appeals to you, the U.S. Virgin Islands is unquestionably one of the best destinations for a yacht charter during the winter months.

Located 29 kilometers south west of the British Virgin Islands, the island chain is better known to locals as ‘America’s Caribbean Paradise’.

Indeed, as well as belonging to the greater Virgin Islands archipelago, the U.S. Virgin Islands are also a part of the Leeward Islands.

To help you decide which of the U.S. Virgin Islands is best for you, we'll take you through the key attractions belonging to each of the islands.

St Croix

Shaped by many different peoples and cultures, the vibrant island of St Croix boasts a diverse range of things to see and do.

For the peacefully inclined, the beaches of Christiansted to the north and Frederiksted to the west provide exceptional surroundings in which to kick back and take in the Caribbean heat.

When it comes to pleasing thrill-seekers, the nearby Buck Island is the ideal destination to equip any snorkeling or diving gear that might be available on board of a yacht. As one of only three underwater monuments to be found across the entire United States, the impressive selection of coral reef and marine life on offer cannot be overstated.

Ultimately, St Croix is perhaps the best US Virgin Island for charter groups who’d like to get a lot done without having to go far at all.

St Thomas

Combining a thriving city live with picturesque tropical scenery, St Thomas boasts well over forty beaches and an assortment of top designer boutiques.

Whilst the island may only stretch to thirty two square miles, St Thomas is still fractionally larger than its neighbour St John, and abounds with a seemingly endless number of possibilities.

Indeed, with the option to visit the world’s second oldest synagogue, go scuba diving amongst some stunning coral reefs, or simply watch the world pass from the comfort of a bar, life on St Thomas is all but unbeatable.

With steady trade winds and sheltered waters, St Thomas is perfect for both sailing yachts and motor yachts

A long time favourite amongst seasoned sailors, St Thomas is fringed by perfectly clear and open waters which call out to be divided into.

Suitable for some water toy and tender experimentation, there’s arguably fewer coastlines better primed for playing around with a seabob or Jetski.

Back on the mainland, visitors will also find the capital of the U.S. Virgin Islands, Charlotte Amalie. Here, they’ll be able to soak up some Caribbean vibes in the form of traditional cuisine and cocktails.

St John

Whilst St John is in close proximity to St Thomas, the two islands couldn’t be less alike. Indeed, St John is an unspoiled nature reserve which is largely covered by flora and fauna.

Popular amongst charter guests who want to escape to an idyllic island, the destination has plenty of dense rainforest to explore as well as volcanic peaks which provide unbeatable views out across the islands.

The distinct lack of any commercial buildings makes St John a truly unique prospect, and the fine golden sands of the beaches call out for visitors to spend entire days in serenity.
