Few destinations match Greece for sheer variety of sailing conditions; a sprawling archipelago of over 200 inhabited islands, spanning three distinct sea areas, each with its own climatic character. For those planning yacht charters in Greece, understanding that variety is as important as checking the forecast. The Aegean runs hot and wind-driven in summer; the Ionian is greener, calmer, and more sheltered; the Dodecanese holds its warmth deep into autumn. What unites them is a generous sailing season, exceptional light, and the kind of reliable summer weather that has drawn seafarers to these waters for centuries.
Summers across Greece are consistently hot and dry, with daytime temperatures ranging from 28°C to 35°C from June through September. The Cyclades and eastern Aegean run hotter and drier than the Ionian, where slightly higher humidity and occasional brief showers are more common even in peak summer.
The meltemi is the defining weather phenomenon of the Greek sailing season, a strong, dry northerly wind that builds across the Aegean from mid-June, reaching peak intensity through July and August at Force 4–6. It typically rises during the day and eases overnight, making morning departures preferable for passages against the wind. The Ionian islands sit largely outside its reach, experiencing the gentler maestro wind instead, making this a more consistently comfortable cruising ground for families and less experienced crews.
Autumn brings some of the best sailing conditions of the year, the meltemi subsides, temperatures settle into the 20–26°C range, and anchorages that are packed in August become quiet and accessible. Winter, from December through February, is cooler at 10-15°C with more frequent rainfall, and sailing activity drops sharply across the country.
Greece Climate Charts
By using our extensive climate guides for each charter region throughout the world, you can explore in-depth weather information for each month and work out which time will suit your individual needs.
For example, the sea temperature will largely affect how much time you intend on spending in the water trying out your superyacht toys so watersports will want to make sure they travel during the warmest periods. In contrast, some areas may become particularly hot during summer and charterers would be advised to book later to ensure more comfortable conditions.
Although the most popular times to embark on a private superyacht vacation are usually during the peak summer months, there are many different elements to take into consideration before you go. Here we have used our detailed climate data to provide a monthly overview of when might be the best times to visit each destination.
May through October represents the core Greek sailing season, but the optimal window depends on experience level, preferred destination, and appetite for wind. May and June offer warm, settled conditions with the meltemi not yet at full strength, a favoured window for first-time charterers and those cruising the Cyclades. July and August bring the most consistent sailing winds in the Aegean, ideal for experienced crews looking to cover distance, but require more careful planning around exposed crossings and busy harbours.
September and October are widely considered the sweet spot for experienced and leisure sailors alike, the meltemi has eased, temperatures remain comfortable, and the islands are noticeably quieter. The Dodecanese, including Rhodes and Kos, hold warmth particularly well into autumn, extending the viable season further than most other regions.
For those drawn to the Ionian, late May through June and September offer the most balanced conditions, avoiding the peak summer heat while still benefiting from reliable sailing winds and warm water.
