Guide to Santa Margherita Ligure

A charming little stop-off on an Italian Riviera yacht charter vacation

It may not have the glitzy reputation of other Italian seaside towns, but with its pretty harbour, palm-laden promenade and town full of colourful buildings, Santa Margherita Ligure is a thoroughly attractive charter itinerary stop-off.

As you get close to Santa Margherita Ligure, the first thing that stands out about this old resort town is its bustling inlet harbour filled with yachts and surrounded by bars, cafes, gelateria and restaurants. Located north of Cinque Terra and south of Genoa on the Italian Riviera, it’s less expensive than Portofino and less rowdy than Rapallo but just as beautiful as both. The result is a collection of trendy young Italians and wealthy visitors drawn in to the town, giving it the impression of being popular among those-in-the-know.

The town has moved with the times enough to offer the best of old and new, with fisherman filling the port at the crack of dawn and the twinkling of luxury charter yachts as night falls. It is split into two parts - one around the harbour boasting gardens and a small beach, and the second featuring the larger, more commercial harbour around the headland. In between is a small castle which leads down to some shady the shady gardens of the sixteenth-century Villa Durazzo which has become a cultural site and now hosts art exhibitions.

Santa Margherita does have one good (though small) beach, but it isn’t the place to enjoy the sand between your toes. Its clear waters and beautiful backdrop however, make it a perfect way to enjoy the luxury amenities of your private superyacht in spectacular surroundings and within throwing distance of the Italian Riviera summer hotspots.

Renting a yacht in this part of Italy, along the sapphire blue Mediterranean sea, offers no end of delights. If you are considering travelling to this region for your next luxury yacht vacation, you can view all crewed yachts for private charter in the Italian Riviera.
