Guide to Phi Phi Islands

The land of all night parties and silverscreen beaches

Set adrift between the island of Phuket and the coast of Krabi, Koh Phi Phi owes its legendary reputation to the awe-inspiring Maya Bay and an all but unrivalled nightlife scene.

Distinctly lacking in hotels and urban developments, Ko Phi-Phi Leh has become a veritable retreat for hedonists and peace seekers alike. Indeed, the island is as famed for its notorious Full Moon parties as its awe-inspiring landscape. Resplendent in wildlife and home to a marine national park, the Ko Phi-Phi islands are an ideal destination to visit during a yacht charter vacation in South East Asia.

Home to one of the most famous beaches in the world, the island’s Maya Bay was the setting for 2000 Hollywood blockbuster The Beach. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, the movie tells the story of a young explorer looking for the world’s most perfect beach. Since its release, discerning travellers have set out to the Phi Phi islands to experience the paradise-like setting for themselves.

Fringed by colourful coral reefs, the waters of the bay are ideal for casual snorkeling and more advanced diving excursions. Heading beneath the surface,  divers can expect to get up close and personal with everything from frogfish to manta rays and leopard sharks.

As well as a rich array of marine life to enjoy, the nearby ‘monkey beach’ is only a short cruise away. As the name suggests, this beach is inhabited by small primates who will be only too happy to swim over and introduce themselves. Anyone setting out to the beach should make sure they’re armed with some supplies- the monkeys are known to be very fond of any snacks they can retrieve from passers-by.

Contrasting the tranquility of the beach and the waters of the Andaman sea which surround it, Loh Dalum on the north facing coast of the island hosts all night parties that typically include fire shows and performances from world-renowned DJs. Ultimately, this is a destination that really does allow its visitors to indulge in the best of both worlds.

In many ways, the Phi Phi islands is the preserve of those on a yacht charter vacation- its location means that it’s only possible to arrive by boat, so it doesn’t suffer from the same crowding as other legendary destinations.
