A dramatic finish to the Superyacht Cup Palma in Mallorca on Saturday saw the iconic 39m/129ft J Class superyacht VELSHEDA clinch the overall victory in the final moments of the regatta.

After two days of thrilling racing on 21 and 22 June, the outcome of the 22nd Superyacht Cup Palma hung in the balance until the final seconds of the third and final St Regis Mardavall Race.

In the end, VELSHEDA took home her second win of the regatta in Class B to finish level on overall points with the 45m/147ft sailing yacht Mari-Cha III, but she was awarded the overall Superyacht Cup title on countback. The 34m/112ft charter yacht SOJANA finished third overall.

The J Class sloop was built in 1933 and has returned to the regatta circuit after a major 2016 refit. Owner's representative Lars Loftus said, “To be in the mix with all the guys in Class B and to be able to hold our own was delightful, then to come out top overall is completely amazing.”

The 33m/108ft sailing yacht WinWin repeated her Class A winning performance of last year, holding off strong challenges from both the 45m/148ft sailing yacht SAUDADE and the 35m/115ft sailing yacht ‘Highland Fling’. These two finished in second and third place respectively.

Going into the finale, all three yachts were tied on points, but WinWin pulled out some immaculate handling and crisp manoeuvres to clinch a narrow victory. However, unfortunately for the Baltic Yachts build, she was unable to repeat her overall regatta win of last year.

The 33m/107ft charter yacht BOLERO won the last race in Class C, but it was not enough to go ahead of the 50m/163ft sailing yacht SILENCIO in the final rankings. BOLERO had to make do with second place while the 62m/203ft charter yacht ATHOS finished third in the class.

In the Corinthian Class, the award-winning 52m/170ft charter yacht Q won two out of three races to finish in first place overall. A new category at this year’s regatta, the class offers more relaxed, entry-level racing and it is expected to make a return in 2019.

The Superyacht Cup Palma is renowned for its brilliant sailing conditions, and as well as offering superb racing, the Mallorcan waters are also perfect for undertaking Mediterranean yacht charters.
