Newport Charter Yacht Show Roundup

By Louise Marsh   27 June 2013

Running from June 17th-20th, the show celebrated its 31st year this year, and was under management by Newport Exhibition Group once more.

Renowned for its historical coastlines and charming seaside towns, New England exudes charm all year round, especially in summer, enticing those who love exploring by sail or motor yacht. This time of year is when the Newport Charter Yacht Show is held. This intimate four day yacht show is one-of-a-kind in North America, displaying the area’s summer charter yachts and catering for charter brokers who are there to inspect the yachts and their crews.

In layman’s terms there are two sides to the show. The wholesale side is for charter managers to promote an owner’s yacht for charter while the retail side is for charter brokers who work for clients and book charters around the globe. Essentially, the wholesale charter managers work for charter yacht owners whereas the retail charter brokers work for clients.

22 charter yachts attended the show this year coming in all shapes and sizes proving that there is indeed a charter yacht for everyone, from day cruises aboard the 23 metre motor yacht Impossible Dream to weekly charters on board the 46 metre charter yachts Golden Compass and Katya.

Yachts based in New England this summer include the 41.76 metre Palmer Johnson superyacht Syrenka and the 25 metre Lyman Morse motor yacht Excellence, designed by Setzer Design Group.

The Captain of Excellence, Jon Snow, commented, “This was the chartering debut for this boat and we received great responses from everyone... We’ve enjoyed the show a lot. It was a learning experience for sure, but I think we’ll do well. This is a classic Maine boat for the stately client who wants to enjoy beautiful scenery and, most of all, great food.”

Educational seminars were held during the first three days of the show to inform visitors about local resources and industry updates. These included an American Yacht Charter Association seminar featuring Hay House Author/Executive Dream Producer Jennifer Grace as the keynote speaker and a presentation by Scott Martinez from Bluewater Technologies regarding information technology onboard yachts.

The lively culinary competitions, organized and sponsored by The Captain’s Concierge, and enjoyable “yacht hops” were a wonderful element of the show, where crew dressed up in costumes to represent their yacht’s chosen theme fascinated guests with gourmet hors d’oeuvres and beverages.

For the second year in a row, Newport Charter Show’s charitable partner was the non-profit organisation YachtAid Global.

I like this show and have done it on other boats in the past. This year I think we landed a couple of charters for the summer - Captain Jeffrey Palmer - Syrenka
