New Superyacht Facility Confirmed for Thailand

By Editorial Team   30 May 2014

In response to the increasing demand for superyacht refit and repair facilities in what continues to be a growing Asia yacht market, it has now been confirmed that a brand new facility will be built in the Thailand capital of Bangkok.

In a memorandum signed by the Phuket-based superyacht marine consultancy Yacht Solutions (YS) along with Bangkok’s Ital Thai Marine (ITM), two of Thailand’s most reputable marine companies have come together in a joint venture that further establishes Thailand as a premier luxury yachting destination.  With the significant growth of the superyacht market in Asia over the past few years, both in terms of Ownership and luxury yacht charter, the two companies have agreed to create what will be the region’s first ever dedicated superyacht facility.

The new facility will be located near the mouth Chao Phraya River in Samut Prakarn, just south of Bangkok which is ideally situated for easy navigation to and from the Gulf of Thailand. It also benefits from deep waters which will be crucial in order to cater to large superyacht refit and build projects in addition to the shorter emergency and maintenance projects.

Yacht Solutions Managing Director Gareth Twist commented: ‘There [in Bangkok], we can handle yachts as big as 95 meters long, up to 20 meters wide and weighing as much as 3,500 tonnes, whereas in Phuket, we can only handle [superyachts that measure] up to 45-50 meters long, 10 meters wide and weighing up to 260 tonnes.’

Since founding in 2001 when the marine industry in Asia had just started to develop, Yacht Solutions has carved a reputation as the leading superyacht marine consultancy in the region. By working with award-winning architecture and design firms they offer refits and services of the highest standards to some of the world’s most impressive luxury yachts. Gareth Twist also confirmed plans to build a similar high capacity yacht facility in Phuket in the near future, once a suitable piece of land with good deep water access has been found.

Recent trends have shown that the superyacht industry in Asia has continued to grow year-on-year and there is an ever-increasing number of luxury charter yachts travelling there each season. By offering facilities that can compete with other regions on an international level, the appeal of this market is certain to expand.
