Entry Guidelines Refreshed For New Zealand Yacht Charters

By Anna Ingles   6 March 2026

New Zealand has introduced clearer, more user-friendly procedures for visiting luxury yacht charters and superyachts, aiming to simplify temporary importation and reduce uncertainty for international owners and charter operators.

The refreshed Temporary Import of Small Craft Guide, developed by NZ Marine in partnership with New Zealand Customs, came into effect on December 1, 2025, and provides straightforward explanations of eligibility, financial security requirements, and the customs assessment process.

Operators can now submit detailed yacht and voyage information in advance through a trial system, allowing pre-arrival confirmation of requirements and helping avoid delays at the border.

We are delighted that Destination New Zealand continues to be a preferred choice for yachts cruising the South Pacific, and that our entry and temporary import procedures remain clear, practical, and user-friendly.

Peter Busfield, Executive Director, NZ Marine

This update supports the hundreds of New Zealand yacht charters and superyachts that visit annually, many arriving during the South Pacific season to explore the coastline while carrying out refits, maintenance, or technical upgrades in established marine hubs.

Temporary entry generally permits stays of up to 21 months without duty or GST (Goods and Services Tax), provided the yacht is exported within the approved period. The guide also covers scenarios where a yacht may be offered for sale, including necessary permissions and potential adjustments to security arrangements.

NZ Marine executive director Peter Busfield emphasized that the updates maintain practical, approachable processes while reinforcing New Zealand’s position as a favored South Pacific charter destination and supporting the country’s growing marine service industry.

Customs encourages advance contact for any questions about entry or import rules.

Discover New Zealand yacht charters

New Zealand continues to attract charter guests with its stunning, varied cruising grounds and excellent infrastructure. From November to April, the prime season, mild weather and settled conditions create ideal opportunities to explore the North Island’s Bay of Islands, with its sheltered anchorages, dolphin pods, and historic sites, or the Hauraki Gulf’s volcanic islands and vineyard-rich Waiheke.

For New Zealand charter itineraries along South Island routes, charter guests can expect to see the intricate Marlborough Sounds, known for fresh seafood and hiking trails, and the dramatic fjords of Fiordland, where Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound deliver towering cliffs, waterfalls, and wildlife encounters from penguins to seals.

Auckland and Whangarei remain key centers for high-quality refit and maintenance services, allowing visiting motor and sailing yacht charters to seamlessly combine adventure with essential works.

These new streamlined entry procedures give greater confidence to those planning New Zealand yacht charters, letting guests focus on the country’s exceptional natural beauty, marine life, and cultural experiences.
