Charter yachts prepare for Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta 2018

By Rebecca Bradbury   1 June 2018

A fine fleet of sailing yachts, including a number of top charter options, are getting ready for this year’s Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta, which gets underway in Porto Cervo, Sardinia, on 5 June.

Ten impressive superyachts are signed up for the annual regatta, organised by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS). After a day of registrations and briefings, three days of thrilling racing in the scenic La Maddalena archipelago will begin from 6 June.

Often considered as the opener of the Mediterranean yacht charter season, the event combines stunning scenery and ideal sailing conditions: an island chain with an abundance of wind, sunshine and racing courses.

The largest entrant is the 50m/163ft charter yacht OHANA from New Zealand shipyard Fitzroy. Designed by Dubois Naval Architects, she blends high-performance sailing with lavish living spaces and, as such, she is both an established racer and a proven platform for private yacht charters.

She will go head to head in class B with another charter offering, the award-winning charter yacht GANESHA from Vitters. Influenced by the iconic J Class, the technically advanced sloop was built for speed and resilience in regattas as well as to offer luxury and comfort on ocean voyages.

Meanwhile, the 31m/101ft charter yacht PENELOPE has expressed an interest to compete. Part of the Oyster 100 series, she boasts a hull optimised for performance and wide, open deck spaces for exceptional handling alongside relaxing and enjoying the surroundings.

The racing in Porto Cervo is technically challenging and the surroundings are unique. Instead of marker buoys, small islands are used to design the 50-plus racing courses available, and many owners enjoy cruising around the idyllic area once the racing draws to a close.

This part of Sardinia is a popular charter destination, renowned for its emerald waters and white sands as well as its luxurious yachting facilities, designer boutiques and award-winning restaurants.

Besides the racing at sea, the YCCS offers a traditional welcome to competitors and there is a number of social events taking place. These include a cocktail reception at the clubhouse, an owner’s dinner and a sunset party at Phi Beach.
