Originally founded in 1932, the Venice Film Festival is the world's oldest event of its kind, and draws superstars and superyachts alike to the unique Italian city.
Usually running for 10 days from late August to early September, the festival aims to raise awareness and promote the various aspects of international cinema in all its forms: as art, entertainment and as an industry, in a spirit of freedom and dialogue.
Much anticipation surrounds which films and industry professionals will bag the top prizes. The principal award, the Leone d'Oro (Golden Lion), is awarded to the best film screened at the festival. The Leone d'Argento (Silver Lion) is awarded to the best director, and the Coppa Volpi (Volpi Cup) is awarded to the best actor and actress.
The hottest film stars and directors flock to Venice for the festival and can be spotted on the red carpet and enjoying the wonderful sights of the city, as well as at the festival's array of glittering parties.
Just as impressive, however, are the superyachts lined up in the marina opposite St Marks Square. Charterers after a star-spotting experience are able to rent a superyacht for the duration of the event and, as tickets for film screenings are open to the general public, rub shoulders with A-listers in the Palazzo del Cinema.
