Nelson's Dockyard, Antigua
11 - 15 Mar 2020
Now in its 10th year, the Superyacht Challenge Antigua will bring together a spectacular fleet of sailing yachts for its anniversary edition.
With no sponsorship, the Superyacht Challenge Antigua is held purely for the enjoyment of the superyacht owners, their guests and crew, although four days of thrilling racing can still be expected.
Throughout its decade-long history, the regatta has taken place in January but, in 2020, the action will begin two months later than usual. The change of date means the challenge will be held just ahead of St Barths Bucket when many superyachts are in race mode. Plus, accommodation will be easier to come by.
As usual, five races will be held over four days on courses marked off the south coast of Antigua. Each course will range from 12 to 30 miles in length and will be set daily depending on the prevailing conditions.
However, in the Caribbean at this time of year, warm trade winds and ocean swell can be expected to produce unrivalled sailing conditions for the 15 or so competitors as well as brilliant viewing conditions for spectators.
Laid-back social scene
Much emphasis is also put on fair racing and good companionship, with a prize for the yacht that has best competed in the ‘spirit of the regatta’ up for grabs. Known as the Gosnell Trophy, it is voted for by competitors and race organisers, and presented during the final prize-giving ceremony.
There is also a lively social scene during the regatta, most of which is based around Nelson’s Dockyard. Festivities take place at the Superyacht Dock beach while the 18th-century Admiral’s Inn hosts a welcome party as well as the prize-giving ceremony on the last evening of the event.
