Yalikavak Marina, Bodrum
Organised by ERA Bodrum Sailing Club, the Bodrum Cup is an annual regatta which aims to promote interest and skill in sailing among the captains and crews of Bodrum’s charter fleet.
Ever since its launch in 1989, the five-day yachting festival has been held at Yalikavak Marina every year in the third week of October and it is renowned for its focus on friendly competition and fun social events.
Held in the autumn, it celebrates the end of the region’s charter season and brings together all the sailing yachts based in Bodrum that have been cruising solo over the summer months.
But, it doesn’t just highlight sailing to locally-based enthusiasts; the event also aims to showcase Turkey’s cruising grounds and the country’s charter fleet of gulet yachts to the world at large.
To do this, the cup is made up of five legs of sailing taking place each day in a different area off the coast of Bodrum. These include Yalikavak, Leros (Greece), Kormen, Kisebuku and Bodrum.
The event also serves as an ideal opportunity for inexperienced sailors to undertake a regatta charter and try their hand at sailing alongside an expert crew.
What’s more, a precursory event - the Bodrum Cup Istanbul Challenge - sees the gulets race from the Turkish capital to Bodrum over 10 days. Before the challenge begins, industry professionals are invited to step on board the fleet at a viewing event supported by TYBA – the Turkish Yacht Brokers Association.
Away from the racing, the on-land entertainment programme can be expected to include an opening event, a cooking competition, parties and a prize-giving ceremony.
