Continuing the tradition of the iconic sailing competition, the 36th America’s Cup is expected to take place in the beautiful waters of New Zealand in March 2021.

The upcoming sailing meet will be contested by the winner of the 2017 America’s Cup – Emirates Team New Zealand – and the winner of the challenger selection series, which takes place prior to the final match.

As the winners of the last edition, the Kiwis get to set the rules of the next regatta and released the protocol in September 2017. This revealed racing will take place on high-performance monohulls, rather than the wing-powered catamarans used in the past two editions.

Auckland in New Zealand is very much hoped to be the host destination but this depends on whether or not the required infrastructure can be put in place. Confirmation of the location and specific race course area will be announced by 31st August 2018, with Italy cited as the back-up destination.

Other new rules include the tightening of the nationality criteria. Now, at least 10 of the 12 man crew must be citizens of the country the team represents and the rest must fulfil strict residency criteria.

Plus, Emirates Team New Zealand - also known as the defenders - won’t place themselves in the challenger series unlike previous winners ORACLE Team USA. Instead, they will wait to enter the competition in the actual America’s Cup match.

The America’s Cup makes a brilliant yacht charter opportunity. There is no better way to take in the racing than aboard a luxury charter yacht and there are usually VIP berthing options and other exclusive packages to take advantage of.
