All you need to know about visiting Porto Montenegro by charter yacht

By Rebecca Bradbury   Last Updated: 19 May 2023

A Montenegro yacht charter is becoming increasingly popular, especially mooring at its marina. Since its opening in 2009, Porto Montenegro – situated in Montenegro’s magnificent Bay of Kotor – has quickly gained a reputation as one of the most glamorous and sought-after marinas in the Mediterranean. Here's what you need to know about Porto Montenegro on a superyacht vacation.

Once a historic naval base, superyacht marina Porto Montenegro now combines spectacular scenery with a world-class, full service marina. Keep reading to discover all you need to know about visiting this award-winning superyacht destination on a luxury yacht charter.

Tax and Duty Free Fuel

Porto Montenegro offers tax and duty free fuel to private and commercial vessels at a cost of approximately 45% less than the standard retail price. As charter yachts are commercial vessels, charterers will be able to benefit from these cheaper fuel costs too.

The dedicated fuel dock is positioned at the end of Jetty 3 and has capacity for yachts measuring up to 250 metres with a 15-metre draft. Plus, there is stock of up to 800,000 litres of duty-free diesel.

With no minimum limit, no registration restrictions and no additional fees, the fuel dock operates every day, all year round. This offers the utmost convenience to those on a yachting vacation.

Yacht-Friendly Legislation

Yacht-friendly legislation is written into Montenegro’s tourism strategy and the country has some of the most favourable nautical benefits in Europe.

One of the most important advantages for charterers is there is no VAT on yacht charters, and this is available alongside a 9% company and capital gains tax, only 7% VAT on marine-related services and outside EU tax and import regulations.

Among the flexible cruising regulations are no restrictions on pick-ups and drop-offs, the ability for foreign vessels to remain in Montenegrin waters with no restriction on time and the ability to make multiple changes to guest and crew manifests.

World-Class Facilities

The marina’s 450 berths are complemented by an extensive range of services and amenities. These range from onsite customs and immigration and 24-hour assistance and security to repair facilities, tax-free wine, champagne and spirits and Wi-Fi and fibre optic internet.

Bringing together a mix of over 50 stores, Porto Montenegro is home to the most vibrant marina-side shopping village in the Adriatic. As well as fashion stores, including designer shops and independent boutiques, there are bars, restaurants and a spa and hair salon.

Meanwhile, the Porto Montenegro Yacht Club incorporates an exclusive members lounge, a private dinning space overlooking a 64-metre infinity pool, a fitness centre, tennis courts, a lively mezzanine bar, a rooftop restaurant and a nightclub.

Ever-More Accessible Location

In recent years, the number of direct flights to Montenegro’s Tivat Airport has been on the rise, making it easier than ever for charterers from around the world to meet with their superyachts.

Prior to this, flights were limited to Podgorica Airport and, from here, it would take a two-hour transfer to reach Porto Montenegro. But, Tivat Airport is just a 10-minute drive away from the marina which, situated in Tivat, forms part of the UNESCO-protected Bay of Kotor.

Porto Montenegro’s location cannot be brought up without a mention of its spectacular setting. New restaurants, bars and cafes are popping up across Tivat to cater to the burgeoning yachting scene, while the surrounding natural scenery is truly breathtaking.

Spectacular Cruising Grounds

Not only does Porto Montenegro act as a gateway to Greece, Italy and Croatia – these destinations are only a short cruise away from the marina – but Montenegro itself has 295 kilometres of stunning coastline which is best discovered by luxury yacht.

Boasting an abundance of natural beauty, the country’s clean, clear waters are still relatively undiscovered among yacht-goers and tourists alike, and are laced with countless uninhabited islands, secret coves, picturesque harbors and unique historical sites.

Equally magnificent is the mountainous interior with monasteries, river canyons, wildlife reserves and glacial lakes. Highlights include Durmitor national park, Ulcinj Beach, Tara Canyon and chic hangouts and open-air clubs in Kotor, Budva and Tivat.
