Guide to Bonifacio

An ancient picturesque cliff-top town guarded by a magnificent citadel

Sitting atop limestone cliffs at the southern tip of Corsica is a magnificent citadel that watches over the ancient fortress town of Bonfacio. Through centuries of battles and sieges this French coastal town is today a beautiful example of relaxed Mediterranean life.

Bonifacio is just a short hop from Sardinia so its location has afforded it an Italianate feel, with Renaissance features and a local dialect that is based heavily on Ligurian. The Old Town is elevated 70m above sea level, with views off of its north side looking down to the yachts that occupy its pretty harbour. The grid of winding cobbled streets are lined with towering medieval sun-bleached houses with flower baskets and scattered washing lines to create the perfect summer scene.

Much of the historical sites are found within the walls of the citadel including 12th Century Eglise Sainte Marie Majeure church and the Il Torrione (Rue des Pachas) - a 35 metre high lookout tower. The centre has been carefully restored to now offer a gentle buzz of cafes, bars and brasseries  spilling out onto the piazza. Aside from the buildings, this part of the town is a must-see just for the views alone.

To reach the sea level below there is a 187 step descent from the citadel where harbour and promenade offer a relaxed, seaside atmosphere. Travelling by private yacht charter is undoubtedly the best way to enjoy Bonifacio, and Corsica in general where you can avoid the summer crowds on
land and reach the secluded nooks and crannies of the coastline. A string of caves and coastal spots only accessible by boat are well-worth a visit, including the Îles Lavezzi, the scattering of small islets where the troop ship Sémillante was shipwrecked in 1855, now designated as a nature
reserve.

Renowned for its unblemished landscapes, dramatic coastline, and points of historic interest, Bonfacio ultimately boasts all of the charms which have become associated with Corsica.
