It is expected that charter licenses could become available to foreign-flagged superyachts as soon as next month in Thailand, in a move to boost local tourism.
Marine department Director-General, Chula Sukmanop, has publically declared that registration for a licence should start for qualified vessels at the beginning of July.
As reported in the Phuket Gazette, Sukmanop stated, “Officials have been discussing how to standardise criteria for the licences. We are pushing hard on what needs to be done, in terms of laws, to allow foreign-flagged superyacht charters in Thailand.” Speaking on the future, he added, “The ministry is fully supporting this matter in order to move Thailand closer toward its goal of becoming the regional maritime hub.”
Dialogue about the change has been ongoing since January; with tourism minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul commenting on the potential he saw of the superyacht charter industry being followed by discussions in Phuket between the Thai government and stakeholders.
It is hoped that the increased availability of the new charter license will help develop Thailand's status as a charter destination of choice for many travelling to South East Asia.
Immigration laws will also be changed to allow crews to legally stay for longer periods of time in Thailand than the current 30-day limit permits.
A meeting will take place tomorrow to discuss the criteria to be submitted to the Ministry of Transport for approval.
