Racing Underway at the 2014 Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta
Racing kicks off today in Porto Cervo for the seventh edition of the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta in glorious sunshine and breezes of 14-16 knots.
Organised by YCCS in partnership with Boat International Media and with the support of title sponsor Loro Piana, a fleet of 21 sailing yachts are participating in this year’s event, split into three divisions. With entrants including the 37m charter yacht MOONBIRD, the 30m Southern Wind sailing yachts CAPE ARROW and FAREWELL and the 28m charter yacht WINDFALL, competition is expected to be tough, albeit friendly. With a fantastic selection of Southern Wind sailing yachts taking part, the regatta also forms the battleground for the 2014 Southern Wind Trophy.
Last night, the yacht owners, along with their guests and crew, enjoyed cocktails on the terrace of the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, giving them the the opportunity to eye up the competition on the quayside below. Final preparations took place this morning and the weather appears to be playing ball so far, providing perfect conditions for the start of the latest edition of this season’s first significant superyacht regatta.
This year, the race committee (headed by Principle Race Officer Peter Craig) have elected for a long course, winding through the islands of Sardinia and the La Maddalena archipelago. The fleet will be sent outside Caprera and La Maddalena and back through bomb alley. Beginning today, the regatta will run until Sunday 7th June.
