Fire at McMullen & Wing Yard Damages Project Star Fish

By Louise Marsh   12 August 2012

Devastating news arrives overnight from New Zealand as fire fighters rushed to McMullen & Wing’s shipyard in Auckland in the early hours of the morning to discover the 50m motor yacht Star Fish ablaze.

Star Fish is the successor to the multi-award winning 45m expedition yacht Big Fish and is being built for the same owner. Nearly two-and-a-half years into her three year build Star Fish already had her structural fabrication finished, mechanical systems nearing completion and electrical systems well advanced. The project was around six months away from completion, and they were mid-way through installing her interior. Unfortunately, the damage to Star Fish is extensive.

Star Fish is McMullen & Wing’s largest project. The yard’s largest construction hall, where the yacht was located, has also sustained damage to its roof and walls.

A full investigation is due to be undertaken to determine the cause of the fire, which is currently unknown.

This is obviously devastating and we’re just grateful that nobody was hurt... (Michael Eaglen, Commercial Manager at McMullen & Wing)
