Details Announced on Rio Olympics Superyacht Charters

By Editorial Team   15 September 2015

In preparation for next year’s biggest sporting event, plans for superyachts attending the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro have been announced.

Yachting regulations during the first Olympics to take place in South America , running from 5 to 21 August next year (followed by the Paralympics in early September), have been publicised by yacht support service Brazil Yacht Services.

It has been recommended by the company, a member of the AYSS Superyacht Global Network, that luxury yachts visiting Rio during the event take anchorage at Guanabara Bay (Baía de Guanabara). The bay is in close proximity to Rio (on the western shore), with airports found at nearby Galeão.

For berthing options, luxury yachts should head to Pier Maua (Porto Maravilha) in Santo Cristo, Guanabara Bay where they can find a 200-metre quay. For the highest protection of visitors from around the world and their superyachts, the area will be guarded by Federal Police, with restricted access to yacht owners, charterers, guests, security and vehicles. The section provided for luxury vessels shall be separate from the terminal for cruise ships, with water and power expected to come from trucks and generators.

It is important to note, that due to the limited marina infrastructure in Rio planning a superyacht charter in advance for the Olympics is hugely important.

From Pier Maua, the four main olympic venues range from 4.6km to 51km away. The atmosphere of the Olympics’ sailing competitions can be enjoyed at Guanabara Bay, however there will be some exclusion zones.

Other regulations include Marina de Glória being closed to foreign yachts (though the availability of tender drop-offs and public access is to be announced) and limitations for draught and moorings at Rio Yacht Club.
