A symbol of wealth and privilege, The Breakers covers nearly an acre of the 13-acre property and is the largest and grandest of the Gilded Age summer “cottages” that line Newport, Rhode Island. These were once owned by some of the wealthiest families in America, from the likes of the Belmonts, Astors and Vanderbilts.
Commissioned by Cornelius Vanderbilt II, The Breakers perfectly encapsulates the Vanderbilts’ extraordinary social and financial pre-eminence in the late 19th Century.
Drawing inspiration from 16th century Genoese and Turin palaces in the classic Italian palazzo style, The Breakers is the culmination of some of the finest American and European artisans of the era. The majestic splendor of The Breakers is further enhanced by its lofty position along the coast, offering spectacular views across the water.
Built between 1883-1885, the opulent 70-room Renaissance mansion features a façade of statuesque exterior columns and arches, while an imposing central Great Hall with 50-foot high ceiling sets the tone inside. The mansion's exquisite decor boasts some of the finest materials in the world; from Baccarat crystal chandeliers to a platinum leaf-adorned dining room, no expense has been spared.
The Breakers was renowned for hosting presidents and royalty across the decades, until the Preservation Society finally purchased the summer residence from the heirs of the family in 1972. The mansion was eventually designated a National Historic Landmark, and today receives hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.
There is also a self-serve garden cafe on the premises, as well as a welcome center. Opening hours are daily from 10am till 4pm. Please note that the house & grounds close one hour after the last tour admission.
