Strategically located on a hillock at the end of the Birgu peninsula, the Fort St Angleo is an architectural masterpiece built in the 13th century.
Originally built in the medieval period as a castle called the Castrum Maris, the fort provided safety to the harbor and also the inhabitants who used it as a refuge during frequent raids. It was later used by the French army as their headquarters, followed by the British Army and the British Navy before becoming open to the public in 2016.
No other fortress has been engaged with the same intensity in the shaping of Malta's destiny as Fort St Angelo and today, it stands as the boldest memorial of the strategic importance of Malta.
