5 Scandinavian highlights for a magical Norway yacht charter

By Katie Scott   8 August 2023

An idyllic paradise of natural beauty, Norway and Scandinavia offer charter guests stunning views of spectacular scenery and neverending magical moments that will last forever. With picturesque treks up mountains and calming kayak adventures along silent rivers, Norway yacht charters are a cooler alternative to the hot Mediterranean sun.

With such a vast collection of memorable locations to discover, get to know the region better with our selection of Scandinavian highlights that you can include on your tailored itinerary for the ultimate escape to Scandinavia.

Reine

Situated in the charming Lofoten archipelago, Reine is an authentic fishing village tucked away on the island of Moskenesøya. A fundamental trading post for the region since 1743, Reine was once dubbed as the most beautiful village in Norway and is commonly seen on the covers of travel guides thanks to its beauty and proximity to the mountain Reinebringen.

Towering above the fishing village with an altitude of 448 meters (1,470 ft), Reinebringen was previously a trek too dangerous to contemplate, but now hosts a stone staircase that makes it more accessible. As well as exploring the area from the mountains, the charter guests on visiting motor yacht charters can kayak in Reine along the calm, tranquil waters.

Møysalen National Park

An outstanding area of natural beauty that must be witnessed, the Møysalen National Park is the perfect addition to a luxury yacht charter vacation, boasting a rare opportunity to explore a completely undisturbed coastal alpine landscape.

Ideal for stretching out sea legs, treks around the national park are invigorating and offer varied terrains for an unforgettable all-around experience. Combining marshland, a pair of glaciers, mount Møysalen, the highest mountain in Lofoten and Vesterålen, and beautiful indigenous flora, this truly is a natural haven for peace, solitude, and unspoiled scenery.

In addition to the environment, yacht charter guests can add birding onto the trek itinerary, with several rare species of falcon and eagles residing in the mountains.

Trolltunga

The trek to Trolltunga attracts thousands of hikers every year and is easily accessible as part of a Norweigan charter vacation or as part of a Northern Europe yacht charter. Also known as Pulpit Rock, Trolltunga means the ‘troll’s tongue' and can be found along the western edge of the famous Hardangervidda plateau, the largest national park in Norway.

Best enjoyed from late May till September, depending on when the snow has melted, the 23km trek across rocky terrain is not for the faint-hearted but rewards those brave enough with jaw-dropping views and invaluable insight into how the last ice age carved out such a staggering landscape.

Bergen

A colorful town that overlooks the North Sea, Bergen is surrounded by seven mountains and is the epitome of a quaint and charming Scandinavian settlement. Situated between two of Norway's most famous fjords, Hardangerfjord and Sognefjord, a Norway yacht charter simply isn't complete without a visit to this culturally-rich town.

One of the biggest highlights of Bergen is Bryggen Hanseatic Wharf. One of the most photographed locations in western Norway, Bryggen joined the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites in 1979 and is renowned for its brightly colored houses lining the eastern side of Vågen harbor. Featuring a bustling fish market, authentic restaurants, and inviting tea rooms, this picturesque area of Bergen is set to be a highlight each and every time.

Aurora Borealis

Commonly known as the Northern Lights, Aurora Borealis is the ultimate must-see experience when chartering Norway. Best seen from November to February, but with good chances anywhere from September to March, a late-night excursion in the Norweigan fjords is magical with the world-famous Aurora Borealis dancing above your head.

Created when charged particles from the sun become trapped in the Earth’s magnetic field, the natural phenomenon attracts thousands of visitors from across the globe each year, with Finland, Iceland and Sweden also poised for advantageous views.

An exceptional addition to a yacht charter, take a look at our sample Norway itineraries for ideas on seamless journeys through the fjords.
