Located on Santa Cruz island, the Charles Darwin Research Station plays a vital role in continuing scientific studies and protection of the indigenous flora and fauna, where visitors learn all about conservation efforts and scientific research being carried out throughout the archipelago. It also offers lectures on ecological conservation.
This tiny Pacific island cluster inspired English naturalist Charles Darwin’s ground-breaking theories of evolution after his visit to the islands in 1835 and became world-renowned after the publication of Origin of the Species, which aroused controversy across the globe.
Exactly 100 years after Darwin’s visit, the government of Ecuador allocated a large portion of the Galapagos over to a wildlife sanctuary, which later became the Galapagos National Park.
It has since been designated as an important UNESCO World Heritage site ensuring the preservation of the archipelago's wildlife and natural beauty for future generations.
