Anafi, Cyclades

Covered in volcanic rock from the eruptions of nearby Santorini, Anafi is a pretty sparse place. But its seclusion is glorious, especially as an antidote to the party lifestyle of its larger neighbour.    

Hora, the only settlement on the island, clings to the hillside amongst the ruins of a Venetian castle and offers sweeping views across the Cretan Sea. Visit Kalamiotissa, a monastery at Anafi’s south-eastern point, before unwinding on one of the south-facing beaches fringing the island.

According to Greek legend, Anafi is said to have emerged from the angry waves at the command of the god Apollo and, today, charterers can experience a laid-back, traditional way of life.
