10 Top Islands in the Great Barrier Reef

Fitzroy Island

5 of 10

A tropical paradise of lush rainforest and sparkling white sand beaches, Fitzroy Island is located on the Inner Barrier of the reef’s Central Region. Predominantly made up of a listed National Park, the island sits on the continental shelf and is, in actual fact, a peak in a mountain chain lying south of Cairns. Snorkel, swim or kayak the coral fringe reef, discover walking trails and magic spots such as the Secret Garden and Nudey Beach, or unwind on beaches lined with coconut trees. There is also a turtle rehabilitation centre open to visitors.
