10 Top Islands in the Great Barrier Reef

Whitsunday Island

2 of 10

The largest of the Whitsundays is Whitsunday Island, home to the world-famous Whitehaven Beach. Regularly ranking number one in polls of the planet’s best beaches, the seven-kilometre-stretch is also renowned for being a top eco-friendly destination. The sand’s dazzling, luminescent colour is thanks to its 98 percent make up of white silica and, completing the postcard perfect scene, are the swirls of turquoise waters that wash the shore. To take in all its beauty from above, head to the Tongue Point lookout.
