Winners of the BOAT Design & Innovation Awards 2020 announced

By Katia Damborsky   3 February 2020

Held last night in Italy, the BOAT Design & Innovation Awards shone the spotlight on a selection of brand new superyachts and their cutting-edge design elements and innovative technologies.

The winners of the Design & Innovation Awards were announced last night as part of the Superyacht Design Festival in Cortina d’Ampezzo.

As ever, the awards honoured the talented design teams behind a selection of superyachts delivered in the past year.

Rather than judging the yachts in their entirety, the winners were recognised for individual aspects of superyacht design including naval architecture, exterior design, deck layout, lifestyle features and interior styling.

Nineteen categories were put forward, including fourteen categories eligible for individual superyachts. Charter yachts stormed to victory in five categories.

‘Lady S’

Winner: ‘Outstanding Exterior Design Motor Yachts (50m and Above)’ & ‘Best Motor Yachts Interior Design (above 500GT)’

Feadship’s 93m /305ft superyacht 'Lady S’ took home the gold in two categories.

Judges noted that her Michael Leach exteriors were contemporary, in-proportion and disguised her large volume with a low profile. They noted the use of black glass to emphasise her length, and recognised her interesting deck features, such as the wasp waist on the aft deck and the touch-n-go helipad that doubles as a sports court.

The yacht’s Reymond Langton interiors also scooped up first place. Balancing playfulness with a contemporary elegance that matches her exterior, her interior areas feel warm and sophisticated at the same time. The judges commented on her versatility, specifically the flexible guest accommodation and the owner’s deck lounge, which has the capacity to transform into a discotheque. They also recognised her IMAX cinema- the first to ever feature on a yacht.

The multi-award-winning 80m/ 263ft motor yacht EXCELLENCE received a judge’s commendation for her ‘well-executed’ lighting. The lighting accentuates all the right elements of the yacht, and contributes to the refined on-board ambience through column details, discreet downlights and well-placed spotlights. The yacht was delivered by Abeking & Rasmussen last year, and both interior and exterior come from Winch Design.

‘Calypso I’

Winner: ‘Best Motor Yachts Interior Design (below 500GT)'

Vickers Studio was recognised for their work on the 36m/ 118ft Mulder motor yacht ‘Calypso I’

Beach house styling gives Calypso ‘an upmarket Ibiza vibe’, according to the judges. The design studio has managed to incorporate aspects of Mulder’s rich naval heritage, with details such as an art wall that is reminiscent of a wooden sailing ship. The designers have also maximised the feeling of height and created a fluid layout throughout the yacht.

BOLD

Winner: Outstanding Lifestyle Feature, Wintergarden/ Loft

Delivered last year by Silver Yachts, the 85m/ 279ft expedition yacht BOLD won an award in the Lifestyle Feature category for her multi-functioning wintergarden/ loft area.

The space is encased by glass partitions which can easily slide out of the way to create a flow between the interior and exterior. Judges were impressed by the flexibility of the space; whenever helicopters need to stored in the hangar below, a section of the winter garden’s floor can be elevated to accommodate the helicopter and appears as a table or room divider. Interiors come from Vain Interiors, while the yacht’s rugged exteriors have been penned by Espen Oeino.

luxury feadship superyacht pi

Use of glass was a recurring theme throughout the awards, with Feadship’s 77m/253ft superyacht PI (formerly Syzygy 818) scooping up the Innovation of the Year award for her 4-ply complex curve structure. The all-glass exterior displays a remarkable feat of engineering from Jarkko Jamsen at Aivan Design, and gives this yacht a formidable profile that stands out from the crowds.

Other notable mentions include 49m/ 161ft motor yacht RACE from Riva, which won Outstanding Exterior Design in the Motor Yachts – 24m to 49.9m category and 64m/ 290ft explorer yacht SCOUT, which received a Judges’ Commendation for Holistic Design.
