Explorer yacht SuRi to undertake two-year expedition to map the ocean floor

By David Lazarevic   18 December 2019

The 63m/ 208ft superyacht SuRi will undergo a two-year expedition to map the ocean floor, giving charter guests the opportunity to join in the experience.

The programme will be led by captain Juan Koegelenberg, with an objective of gathering topography data using her U-Boat Worx Cruise Sub 7 multibeam echosounder.

The Nippon Foundation and General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans (GEBCO), will then use this information to contribute to the world’s first 3D map of the ocean floor, known as Seabed 2030.

The two-year trip will see SuRi launch her submersible, which is capable of reaching depths of up to 300 metres below sea level. The sub will begin its research off remote South Pacific islands, including Cocos Islands, Solomon Islands, and Papua New Guinea.

Ofer Ketter, the onboard submarine pilot,  states “With less than five per cent of the oceans explored, this is an opportunity for guests to be part of a wide range of world-first discoveries.”

If they are interested, guests on their luxury yacht charter will have access to the submarine and will be given the opportunity to traverse the underwater world of the Pacific Ocean. The on-deck marine biologists will be able to provide charterers with an active, hands-on research adventure.

Charterers onboard the expedition yacht will be a part of pioneering research. This is the first charter experience of its kind, described by Cookson as “the ultimate underwater experience”.

Adam Sebba, chief executive of Cookson Adventures, suggests that their core beliefe is to create unique and innovative experiences, stating that “the adventures will be utterly personalised to match each client’s curiosities – creating stunning experiences for even the most seasoned explorers.”
