ShowBoats Design Awards 2013 Winners Announced

By Louise Marsh   25 June 2013

From multi-award winners to yacht design newcomers, the 2013 ShowBoats Design Awards highlighted the creative talents behind the most exquisite superyachts delivered in the last year.

The ShowBoats Design Awards 2013 winners were announced in Monaco over the past week in an award ceremony that took place at the stunning Monaco Opera House. The night began with a superb operatic performance by the world-famous soprano Mari Moriya and ended with a spectacular celebratory dinner at the Hotel de Paris.

The award night saw a number of charter yachts and their designers taking home prizes:

The 73.51m Nobiskurg charter yacht Mogambo won the Recreational area for guest use award for her sun deck, sponsored by Van Berge Henegouwen. Receiving high praise for its dimensions, use of space and fresh design, the judges felt it met the clients’ brief for a multi-function outdoor social space perfectly. Featuring a pool, cinema and a small gym, it incorporates a full shower room within the mast structure to add functionality without distorting the yachts stunning profile.

Dykstra Naval Architects won the Naval architecture Award - Sailing yachts for the Holland Jachtbouw modern J-class charter yacht Rainbow. The judges were most impressed by the difficult work that was required to design her, having to meet the requirements of the modern J-Class rule while using a historic hull shape.

Sam Sorgiovanni won the award for Exterior design & styling - Displacement motor yachts 60m+, sponsored by Foglizzo 1921, for Nirvana ycht for charter. The harmonious flow of the 88.5m Oceanco’s lines caught the judges eye and the exterior paint scheme was admired for its richness.

In addition, the ShowBoats Design Awards presented a new award this year -  the Lifetime Achievement Award - to honour John Munford, one of the industry's most celebrated designers. John Munford commented, ‘It’s emotional... I was accused of not being able to speak in a few languages – I can draw in any language. And the advantage of being able to draw in any language is the ability to lend the pencil to the client and they become involved in the process.’

I can draw in any language. And the advantage of being able to draw in any language is the ability to lend the pencil to the client and they become involved in the process.
