Every Four Years, Between the End of May and July
Awarded every four years, the FIFA World Cup is an international football competition involving 32 international teams.
The World Cup has been played every four years since it's premier in 1930, with the two exceptions of 1942 and 1946 beacause of World War II. After the qualification phase, which takes place over the three years leading up to the World Cup, the 32 competing teams play against one another at selected grounds within the host nation(s) over a month.
There have been 19 World Cup tournaments so far, with Brazil winning five times, and being the only team to have competed in every single tournament. Other winners include Italy, Germany, Argentina, Uruguay, England, France and Spain.
The FIFA World Cup is the most widely watched sporting event in the world, with an estimated 715.1 million people watching the 2006 final, held in Germany.
