Guide to Kefalonia

Emerald isle of mesmerising beauty

The largest island in the Ionian archipelago, Kefalonia offers spellbinding vistas with lush, pine-clad mountains and charming pastel-hued villages.

The island's spellbinding beauty also formed the backdrop for Louis de Bernières’ iconic novel Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, with the award-winning eponymous film capturing the imagination of a global audience.

With numerous instagram-worthy beaches to choose from, many of them only accessible by boat, Kefalonia has long been a draw card for luxury yacht charters looking for a secluded getaway in Greece. Among these is the picture-perfect Myrtos Beach that lies in the island’s north-west flank; a pristine stretch of sands bordered by high limestone cliffs and lapped by turquoise waters so clear it's utopia personified. During the summer months it can get quite busy, with the best times to visit in the morning and late afternoon when all the tourists have departed.

For something a little more secluded, the mellow waters of Dafnoudi and Emblisi Beach boast excellent snorkeling, while on Koroni and Lefka Beach you can enjoy unique sightings of the island's beloved residents; Loggerhead sea turtles that congregate in huge numbers on their shores.

For culture vultures, the confectionery-colored Venetian houses of Assos are an absolute must-see on your tour of the island. Overlooked by the ruins of a medieval castle, this pretty scalloped hamlet set against a backdrop of lush hillsides and craggy distant mountains is a great place to drop anchor for a spot of lunch, or overnight stay.

Another cultural attraction is the beautiful Venetian coastal village of Fiskardo in the northeast, opposite the island of Ithaki. One of the most popular spots on the island, Fiskardo escaped the ravages of the 1953 earthquake and has retained its unmistakable Dolce Vita vibe. Boasting a plethora of upmarket seafood restaurants, chic boutiques and a winding waterfront lined with superyachts, you may think you’re in Saint Tropez. A great place to enjoy some fine dining ashore.

Of course, a visit to Kefalonia would not be complete without a visit to its famous Melissani Cave, where you'll find an astonishing aquamarine lake set within a magical cavern. The oculus in the roof allows sunlight to filter in, providing a shimmering light show that has to be seen to be believed.

Boasting countless jaw-dropping beaches, glorious medieval castles and dreamy coves, Kefalonia is a private yacht charter paradise for anyone cruising the region. Start planning your next trip with family and friends by comparing all Greece charter yachts
