Guide to the Lastovo Island

Relax and unwind on an island that is beautifully unmodernised

When you’re visiting the island of Lastovo you could be forgiven for thinking you’ve reached the edge of the world. Its famously clean waters lap an untouched coastline that has so far been spared the signs of tourism and remains a closely guarded secret by both Croatians and the yachting community.

Second only to Vis as the furthest away of the Dalmatian Islands at around 55 nautical miles from the cost of Dubrovnik, Lastovo is wild, remote and beautiful. Like much of the southern waters of the Dalmatia Coast, the island is becoming more popular by the year for Mediterranean charter vacations due to its untouched scenery and sense you are experiencing the real Croatia.

This increase in interest has supported the creation of a few good restaurants and amenities, but overall the island offers a charmingly unmodernised atmosphere. The main harbour can be found in the sheltered inlet Luka Velji Lago which offers a yacht quay and anchorages and additional anchorages can be found in Mali Lago and Zaklopatica the north and Skirvena Luka in the south.

Like its neighbour island Vis, Lastovo’s military past meant it was closed to visitors until recent years which can be attributed to its unspoiled environment. This has earned the entire island National Park status amongst its hilly green interior and sparkling bays and coves along the coast. Some interesting Venetian architecture can be found scattered around, particularly in St. Michael’s Bay where you can also embark on hiking trails across the island.

Lastovo is surrounded by 46 smaller islands and islets though most of the 800 or so permanent residents of the archipelago live in the main settlement Lastovo Town. The islands indented coast is also well-known for its diving opportunities, particularly the north dive site of Seka Drašan and the sites along the south coast such as Stuga. The reputation of the dive sites here mean that there are plenty of dive schools available to help you explore.
