Known as the ‘players’ favourite,’ the Australian Open 2014 will once again be the highlight of the tennis calendar.

From 13th -26th January 2014 the focus will be on Melbourne once more as the very best tennis players compete for the first Grand Slam title of the year. The Australian Open men’s and women’s singles title will attract 128 competitors each with the men competing for the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup, and the women for the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Trophy.

When the tournament began back in 1905, it was called the Australiasian Open and took place on grass courts at the Warehouseman’s Cricket Ground in Melbourne. In 1927 it became the Australian Championships and since 1969 it has officially been known as the Australian Open, moving to its current home, Melbourne Park, in 1988.

Melbourne Park is currently being refurbished, with the new-look Tennis Centre being the first stage of the $363m redevelopment, due to be completed in 2015.

This year, as well as an increase in the prize money, there will also be the introduction of Hawk-Eye to Show Courts 2 and 3.
